Pride & Peanuts
Tuesday, February 28, 2006

I'm on the mailing list of a media P.R. company that's always trying to entice me into doing movie reviews and promotions on Spacegirl. Most of the movies they represent don't interest me, so I never bit until they offered me an advance copy of Pride & Prejudice. Being the frothing-at-the-mouth sort of Jane Austen fan that I am, I accepted the DVD and wrote up a review. I'm not going to rehash my opinion of the movie here, what I want to discuss is the box they sent it in. Yes, the box.

To: Space Girl

First off, anything addressed to me as "Space Girl" cracks me up. I don't know why, but it just does. It makes me feel like a super hero in disguise, receiving her secret assignment via FedEx.

So, I got the box, pried it open and encountered this:

Ah, the Sweet Smell of Roses!

Yep. Those are rose petals. And styrofoam peanuts. It's potpourri for the plastic-age. I laughed so hard when I saw it, I nearly cried. Does anything say romance quite like a quiet evening of Pride & Prejudice, rose petals and styrofoam peanuts? I think not, but I do think Jane Austen would heartily approve. She took delight in the absurd.

How Romantic!

Funny about the box!

I share your thoughts on the plot - I think they made her hair so bad because Jane is supposed to be the beauty of the family and they didn't want Elizabeth to outshine her.

Didn't you just love the scene where they're dancing and everyone else disappears? And the way the camera follows different people at the ball in one long continuous shot?

Awesome.

Her hair was terrible. Truly awful. It actually made me mad! I thought the girl they had as Jane was really pretty. I think she's actually dating the guy who played Bingley!

Oh and I loved the continuous shot at the ball. And stupid as this may sound, I actually got choked up when Mary cried to her father about practicing all week on the song. It made her character real to me. And that scene where Charlotte Lucas explains her engagement. So sad.
