Bang Bang
Sunday, March 19, 2006

There was a shooting on our block the other night. I know, because I heard it. People on TV always describe gunfire as sounding like "pops" or "firecrackers" or "a car backfiring". It didn't sound like that to me. What I heard Friday night sounded exactly like gunshots. I was in the bathroom when it started. I thought, "Hmmm, sounds like someone is shooting outside." So I did something that I knew was stupid at the time, yet I did it anyway: I went into the bedroom and looked out the window. I saw two people jog across the street and a couple of other people walk by and a car drive through the intersection and stop by the curb. That's it. Nothing out of the ordinary. I half expected to hear sirens, but no cops came. I figured I must have been mistaken. Maybe real gunshots sound like firecrackers and firecrackers sound like guns. What would I know about it?

When Kyle got home the first thing he said was, "Did you hear anything tonight?"

I said, "Like what?"

He told me our street was taped off and cops were idling in their police cruisers. He asked two of them what was going on, but they said they didn't know, they just went on duty and they were busy reading the paper. Then he asked one of our security guards and they said there had been a shooting. Surprise, surprise.

We still don't know who did the shooting and if anyone was actually shot.

This isn't our first brush with gun violence. A couple of years ago someone was shot right outside our bedroom window, down by the pay phone. Detectives knocked on our door and asked Kyle if he'd heard anything. He said it was just like Law & Order. Fortunately, I was out walking Lulu at the time the police came or they might have shot her. She totally would have bitten one of them.
