The Angry Knitter
Thursday, September 14, 2006

Flapper HatSo, I bet you've never had this experience before. You hear the ding heralding a new email. It's from a knitting company, which is always good fun, since you love knitting. So you scroll past the wooden crochet hooks that you assume you would never be able to afford (and why would you need more crochet hooks anyway?) and see your face peering back at you from the side bar. Never happened to you before, right? Well, it just happened to me. Imagine my surprise.

After I stopped laughing, I clicked on the link that is my face and saw that they used a full version of the picture in the gallery section of their site, the reason being that the hat I'm wearing in the picture was crocheted using their pattern. And a very good pattern it is indeed. I can't wait until it's chilly enough to wear it. But I have a problem. I don't like people using my imagery with out my permission. Oh, just call me a stickler for details. A internet-age party-pooper. The un-fun illustrator who won't scan and send patterns from out dated issues of Interweave Knits to people, even if they beg. I really don't mind paying for patterns. The people who design them put a lot of energy and expertise into writing them; the least I can do is pay them and give credit where it's due when I display the fruits of our collective labor on The Angry Knitter. I guess it's a side-effect of being a freelance artist who is very cognizant of copyright issues. (God, I can't believe I spelled "cognizant" right on the first try without looking it up!) I respect other people's copyrights and I expect the same from them.

I guess I really should go into the photo licensing business.
