Cute and Curly
Saturday, September 09, 2006

I can't believe how long I've had this website. The pulldown menu in the side bar is ridiculously long. I don't even know why I'm thinking about this today. I guess because I was editing and uploading Random essays on Spacegirl, which is even older than Trippyswell. In fact, Spacegirl turned ten this year. Ten! It's hard to fathom.

It's funny to read some of the older Random essays. I was a completely different person a decade ago. Not better, not worse, just different.

I feel old. Like I've covered a lot of ground in ten years, which I guess I have. Ten years ago I wasn't married. In fact, I started dating Kyle the same year Spacegirl was born. I was a size 2, I still blew my hair out straight and wore contact lenses religiously. Ten years ago I had a Pentium 75 for Pete's sake.

At least I don't look old. A woman on one of the boards I frequent wanted advice on how to look older. She feels her curly hair makes her look "young" and "cute", which it does--I've seen her picture. I understand her frustration. I've been called "cute" many a time. When I was in college a close friend told me small girls could be cute, but not beautiful. Of course I took great offense to such a remark. Surely there are some sexy short women out there. None of them are supermodels, but I realized a long time ago the futility of comparing regular people with models. Eva Longoria comes to mind. She's tiny and sexy, although she's got straight hair. I suppose there is something Shirley Templeish about curls, the same way glasses give the impression of intelligence. I guess that would make me cute and smart, which is not such a bad combination. As for not looking my age, I can't fathom how that could be a bad thing, especially since I'm getting on it years. I love getting carded. I don't want to look thirty-four. I don't want more wrinkles. I don't want to look haggard and careworn, even if I occasionally feel that way.

I hope I continue to look younger than I actually am. It will come in handy ten years from now.

You still look quite young, no where near your age.
I was carded today, and I'm 33, lol. If you want to see old looking, come to my town. There's a 16 year old here that looks older than me, scary. I think it's something in the water.

Yeah, seriously. You should ask someone who's really ugly what that's like. They're not sexy AND they're not cute, either. Those are shoes you wouldn't want to walk in. So, I'd say the glass is at least half full here (but probably a lot more than that) if people have often paid you the "cute" compliment.

As for all the stuff about feeling old and everything that's happened in 10 years... I hear you loudly and clearly. That kind of reflection sounds like the kind of stuff I'm always musuing on over at my blog. I like reading about other people's perspectives on the whole aging thing.
