My jaw hurts so bad. Several months ago I started going to a honest-to-goodness TMJ specialist by the name of Dr. James Uyanik, the former director of the Center for Oral, Facial and Head Pain at Columbia University Medical Center. I highly recommend him. Under his advice (and along with his prescription pad) my TMJ pain became almost nonexistent. This miracle was due to the muscle relaxant he prescribed. I didn't really want to use a drug to control the pain, but honestly, Advil is a drug and I'd been taking upwards of 5 of those a day for years. That can't be good -- for anybody. So I started taking Flexeril at dinner time. It worked wonders. I became 90% pain free. Woohoo, right? The downside is that the Flexeril makes me eat like a starving pig at a Pennsylvania Dutch smorgasbord. I gained about ten pounds, which on someone petite as I am is a lot. Not enough to stop taking the meds, but enough to start feeling uncomfortable in my own skin. Luckily for my old jeans, the doctor has weaned me off the medication. I suppose some people can do the meds for a while, then go off and be pain-free. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. Sure, I'm not stuffing my face any more, but I am back to the old grind, so to speak. My next course of action is physical therapy and possibly trigger point injections. Even though I'm pretty sad about the return of the pain, I'm optimistic about my future course of action. And, wonder of wonders, the physical therapist actually accepts my insurance. Huzzah!
