Back In The Saddle Again
Monday, April 02, 2007

Today, for the first time in months, I got up and did something very unlike me: I exercised. You may remember I went through an exercising jag last summer which culminated in a fractured heel. I had to wear a boot for six weeks (including the steamy month of August), but I promised myself that I would begin working out again in November. That, of course, didn't happen, since I am basically a lazy ass and I'd much rather roll out of bed and drink a cup of tea, eat some cinnamon toast and read my email, than pop in an exercise DVD and get all sweaty. Unfortunately, eating cinnamon toast and sitting on my ass isn't good for my health, so I decided to get back on the horse, so to speak. I chose an easy half hour video (Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Lbs Express 3-Pack) and even that was almost too much for my oxygen-deprived lungs and atrophied leg muscles. But I stuck it out all the way through the cool down stretch and now I feel infinitely better, as if I accomplished some great feat, like finishing a triathlon. Yeah, I know, I'm a wimp, but maybe someday I can be a slightly healthier wimp.

It looks like you're "Back in the Saddle Again" in more ways than one. Not just the exercise, but the bevy of post this past week on blogger!

Funny, on Friday, a couple days before you wrote this, I, too, did something active. I jogged on the treadmill for the first time in months. I have gone through eras where I'm pretty good about getting some exercise (3 times a week—for me, that's good), but then I always end up stopping and not doing anything for months.

I love to do active things—I love racquet ball or tennis or even playing catch or frisbee—but those things require a willing partner so I rarely get to do them. So what's the best way to get some quick exercise in a short amount of time when you're by yourself? Running on a treadmill! But what is the most awful, boring thing in the world for me? Running on a treadmill!

I will never be one of those people who says, "I enjoy running. It makes me feel good!" I mean, it makes me feel good when it's over and I feel fit and like I've accomplished something, but the act itself bores me to tears. And despite what people say, watching TV while you run only makes it SLIGHTLY more enjoyable. No...I would favor non-running over running all the time, TV or not.

I haven't had the time to run again since then, although last night, I walked a pretty sizeable distance. We brought the boys in for haircuts and after they were finished, Sue stayed to get her hair cut. Trying to contain them at that locale in the two-boys-per-one-parent set-up proved pretty difficult, so I put 'em in the double-stroller and started walking home. I left the car for Sue. The walk wasn't crazy, but it was long enough that she got her entire haircut done and headed home and passed me along the way while I was still walking. I told her to keep going and I'd meet her at home, 'cause at least I got a decent walk in. I actually would have jogged with the stroller—and started doing so at the beginning—but I was NOT wearing suitable shoes for such an activity and I wisely talked myself out of it or there would have been hell to pay in the form of sore arches for the next week. Not that talking myself out of running was a difficult thing. I was very agreeable with myself on that front:

"Maybe you shouldn't be jogging, you know?"

"It's a deal!"

I love it when you leave comments that are longer than my post. Instant content!

I know what you mean about exercising. I don't enjoy it while I do it, it's more about the feeling of accomplishment I get afterwards that makes it worthwhile. Also, it's good for my health.

We used to have a stationary bike. Man, was that thing torture. I'd rather do those stupid aerobics tapes I got than ride that bike to nowhere, even while watching TV. The only thing it was good for was hanging clothes on, collecting a lot of dust and making me feel guilty and lazy. I think I'd like a treadmill though. I like to walk. Last week I walked around the city for five hours and then walked home over the Brooklyn Bridge. I was ready to die by the time I hit the couch.

I was thinking of that while I was posting. Yeah, I'm not much good at being brief. I usully only post when I've got plenty to say. I never do those posts that say only a few general words, like, "Oh, I agree! Sounds like you had fun!" Not, of course, that there's anything wrong with those posts...

Yes, stationary bikes are SUPER boring. They may be worse than treadmills.

[[[ I think I'd like a treadmill though. I like to walk. ]]]

I like walking, too, but the treadmill just doesn't have the same excitement. Even when I am walking around the same neighborhood I've walked through a jillion times, I still like looking at the houses and seeing cats running into the bushes and just sort of taking it in. The treadmill is more like marching in place in your living room. Try that for a few minutes and see how quickly that gets old.

I love WATP. How are you doing with it? Keeping it up? I have been walking my 2 dogs outside but that is n't really exercise like WATP makes you feel. Good luck with it!

I love WATP too. I'm too uncoordinated to do regular aerobics. I need to move around and breathe heavy for thirty minutes with out being expected to learn dance steps or feeling like a dork because I can't keep up with the instructor.
